PARIS -- Jewelry was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday morning, French daily Le Parisien reported.

According to the report, masked perpetrators allegedly entered the museum through an area under construction, reportedly used a freight elevator to reach the targeted room and broke windows to gain access. Then they took nine pieces of jewelry from the collection of Napoleon and the Empress and are currently on the run.

French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati said on social platform X that a"robbery" took place on Sunday morning as the museum opened, adding that"no injuries have been reported."

The museum also announced on X that it would be closed on Sunday "for exceptional reasons."
