Polish Military Response and Defense Actions

Civilian Impact and Damage

Ukraine has asked NATO to shoot down drones over its territory that are apparently heading towards Polish airspace.

This was announced by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who stressed that no decision has been made on the matter yet.

"Ukraine asks us that if something is clearly approaching our borders and poses a direct threat to us, we can do so (shoot it down - TASR note) over their territory. I emphasize that this is a Ukrainian request and no decisions have been made," said Sikorski.

The minister reported that Polish, Dutch, Italian and German forces participated in the night air operation, and thanked the partners."What happened last night - and I remind you that the attack lasted many hours, in fact the whole night - confirmed that our air defense system and the entire state response system are working well," he added.

Sikorski also commented on the statement of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which stated that it had no plans to attack Polish territory and was open to consultations with the Polish side on this matter.

"It's interesting because the chargé d'affaires of the Russian embassy immediately said that these were not Russian drones. So if this is an admission of guilt, then we are making progress. But we would have preferred if they had simply not sent these drones over Poland," said the head of Polish diplomacy.

He added that some of the drones arrived from the territory of Belarus, which he said proves that it was a planned action.

According to Sikorski, Poland will push for strengthening air defense, including the deployment of Patriot systems and the construction of a so-called anti-drone wall.

The minister appreciated the expressions of support from the NATO Secretary General, European Commission President von der Leyen, and other European leaders.

At the same time, he expects the US to confirm its readiness to support Poland's security.
