The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) reported this on the social network.

"The wind may intensify as the system moves into warmer air in eastern Slovakia. At the same time, other local storms have begun to form ahead of it, some of them even supercells with possible larger hail," notes the SHMÚ.

"As a result of the storm with strong gusty winds, we are recording several fallen trees and broken branches on roads in the region. The situation can change quickly!" he warns police in the Košice region and called for extreme caution on the roads.

The storm system is associated with a cold front, behind which it cools down significantly to 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. According to meteorologists, the cooling will be felt most in Zemplín, where the temperature reached 35 to 37 degrees Celsius.

Gelnica and Prešov declared a state of emergency

The city of Gelnica declared a state of emergency early Monday evening due to the weather."A crisis team has just started meeting at the ice rink after today's extremely strong storm, which caused significant damage. We ask citizens to document the extent of the consequences of the weather in their area and add photos to the comments," the city informed on social media.

Extreme weather with strong winds caused damage in many places in eastern Slovakia, with the wind breaking trees and tearing off roofs from houses.

The city of Prešov was hit by a storm with extremely strong gusty winds on Monday. Several roads are impassable due to fallen trees and the roofs of some buildings. A crisis team met in the city and an emergency situation was subsequently declared at 6:20 p.m. TASR was informed about this by the city's spokesman Michal Hudák.

As he said, state forces, as well as volunteer firefighters, are responding to the fire in the city. The Prešov City Crisis Staff will meet again at 8:00 p.m.

"Residents of the city of Prešov who were affected by this natural disaster and have recorded material damage can contact an employee of the city of Prešov and a member of the crisis staff at the address peter.kulan@presov.sk or the Prešov City Police on the hotline 159," said Hudák.

As he said, according to the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, from 5:05 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Prešov district there is an increased probability of very strong storms associated with heavy downpours with an intensity of 30 to 50 mm/30 min, with wind gusts of 25-35 m/s (90-125 km/h) and with hail.

Extremely strong winds swept through Šariš

A storm system accompanied by very strong winds with gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour (km/h) is currently moving through Šariš in eastern Slovakia, the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) reported on its social network.

"It is moving north to northeast and will pass through other districts very quickly, within the next few dozen minutes," notes the SHMÚ.

The districts of Bardejov, Prešov, Sabinov, Stropkov, Svidník and Vranov nad Topľou are currently under third-level storm warnings. According to meteorologists, there is an increased probability of very strong storms associated with heavy downpours with an intensity of 30 to 50 mm in 30 minutes, with wind gusts of 90 to 125 km/h and hail. Second-level warnings are in effect for the remaining districts of eastern Slovakia and some districts of central Slovakia. First-level warnings are in effect for most of central and part of western Slovakia.

Svidník: We faced a storm that hasn't been here for a long time

Svidník is currently dealing with the consequences of the storm that swept through the city.

"We faced a storm that has not been here for a long time. The greatest damage is so far on public green spaces and we are also assessing other damage. We are in the field, the city's volunteer firefighters, the city police and the Technical Services of the city of Svidník. We are working on assessing and continuously removing the damage, of course with professional firefighters. It seems that the storm has stopped, so I believe that things will go faster now, including determining what actually happened," said the mayor of Svidník Marcela Ivančová, adding that there is a power outage throughout the city.

"We haven't recorded any increased water levels yet, so this is the better news in all this misery, but there are broken trees and branches all over the city," the mayor stated.

There is no damage to buildings at the moment, she said, but they will investigate. They also expect people to suffer damage, as some trees fell on parked vehicles.

Impassable roads in the Košice region

Many roads in the Košice region are currently impassable due to fallen trees on the roads as a result of strong storms. This was confirmed to TASR by Košice regional police spokeswoman Lenka Ivanová.

"Members of the Fire and Rescue Corps (HaZZ) are removing trees, members of the Police Corps are directing traffic. We appeal to citizens, if it is not necessary, to consider the necessity of their trip, and if they must go on the roads, to be more careful," said Ivanova.

Power outages

Strong storms, including with windstorms, caused power outages in many places in eastern Slovakia on Monday."Východoslovenská distribučná (VSD) recorded a cumulative outage for tens of thousands of consumption points, while it is gradually defining the faults and restoring electricity distribution at the dispatching control level," VSD spokeswoman Andrea Forbergerová told TASR.

According to her, the exceptionally adverse weather in the early evening primarily affected the north of the VSD distribution area."The windstorm with rain primarily affected customers from the locations of Bardejov, Prešov, Lipany, Krompachy, Svidník, and partly Košice and their surroundings," the spokeswoman informed. She pointed out that, according to available information from meteorologists, the strong wind reached a speed of more than 100 kilometers per hour and scattered various objects across the streets. Roofs, trees, branches fell on power lines, insulators and consoles were damaged, and wires were also torn.

"There are also emergency teams in the field, fighting the consequences of the wind and rain storm so that the electricity supply is restored as quickly as possible, and this has already been achieved for almost half of the consumption points," Forbergerová stated.

Sabinov is monitoring the situation

The city of Sabinov is monitoring the situation in the city after Monday's strong storm. As it reports on social media, the storm caused various property damages.

"We are recording fallen branches and trees, overturned trash cans, and mess in public spaces," the city hall informs, adding that it is actively monitoring the situation.

"Today, we will ensure the trafficability of main roads and communications so that traffic is as smooth as possible. We will start removing the consequences of the storm tomorrow. We will do everything possible to ensure that life in the city returns to normal soon," the city adds.

He also says that he is also monitoring watercourses in the city. In the event of increased levels or any dangerous situation, he will immediately inform residents.

Police warn of impassable roads

The police are warning residents of the Prešov region about the adverse weather situation, which is accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds. As they inform on social media, there are traffic restrictions in several places, some sections of roads are completely impassable.

"All rescue services, including members of the Slovak Police Force, are working intensively to manage the situation. We ask for your patience, increased caution and consideration when moving on and off the roads," the police said, appealing to people to monitor current traffic information and follow the instructions of the responding services.

Strong winds also plague Hungary

Storms with wind gusts reaching hurricane force hit the Transdanubian region of Hungary on Monday. Wind gusts of up to 130 km/h were measured at Lake Balaton in places. This was reported by TASR's correspondent in Budapest, referring to the nepszava.hu server.

The Civil Protection Authority (OKF) intervened in more than 500 locations, its workers most often removing damage caused by fallen trees.

A storm disrupted train services around Lake Balaton and Budapest's Liszt Ferenc International Airport was closed for a while, causing significant delays to flights.

After the effects of storms with strong winds were eliminated on Monday evening, both runways at Budapest's Liszt Ferenc International Airport resumed operations. Budapest Airport (BA) announced this on Facebook, reports TASR's correspondent in Budapest.

The runways, which were blown by strong winds and debris, were temporarily closed at 2:20 p.m. for safety reasons. Several incoming flights were diverted to other airports and two flights from Budapest were canceled.
