Historic Nature of the Match

Consolation for Anisimova

Until this season, Iga Świątek seemed to have major problems playing on grass. This year, however, the Polish player was given a little more time to work on improving her game on this surface, which resulted in a slightly early exit from the tournament at Roland Garros. Świątek used these few days to work with Wim Fissett on sunny Mallorca.

We saw the results immediately, actually, during the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg. In this tiny German town, our star reached the grass-court final for the first time in her senior career, giving her a ton of confidence heading into Wimbledon.

The match went brilliantly for the Polish player, as Świątek herself was in excellent form from the very first match, and her most dangerous opponents unexpectedly lost consecutive matches. This led to the Raszyn player advancing surprisingly smoothly to the final, where the world's 13th-ranked player, Amanda Anisimowa, awaited her. The match was absolutely unbelievable, as Świątek didn't concede a single game.

It feels absolutely surreal to me right now, it hasn't sunk in yet, I never even dreamed of it. I want to congratulate Amanda on an incredible two weeks. Regardless of what happened today, be proud of your work. I hope we'll play many more finals and other tournaments here. You have the strength for this. Congratulations to your team as well," our star began, eagerly on the court.

"I felt like I was a pretty experienced player; I'd played Grand Slam finals before, but never this. I definitely want to thank my team. They believed in me more than I did, and I want to thank my coach, who joined us this year. We've had our ups and downs, but now we've proven that it all works. I can't forget the entire team that's been with me for so many years. Without your support, trust, and self-awareness, this wouldn't have been possible," she continued.

Suddenly, Świątek began speaking in her native language to thank her family."I want to thank my entire family who came especially for this final, especially my dad, without whom I wouldn't be here, who pushed me to work through many difficult moments, when I was still too stupid to understand it ," she added, apologizing for the sudden change of language.

"I'd also like to thank everyone who makes this tournament so special. I've always been a little nervous about it because when I walked through these streets, when I stepped onto Centre Court, I felt so much pressure. This year, however, I felt like I was really enjoying it, that I improved my game immensely. I also want to thank the entire Wimbledon team, who are there to help us every step of the way. I can't forget my sponsors, everyone who supported me from home, and finally, of course, the fans in the stands for coming here. For me, being part of this incredible event is incredible. It's something incredible, an unforgettable moment. I hope we can enjoy a beautiful men's final tomorrow. See you next year," she concluded.
