Sunday's message: the right-wing candidate is Bolsonaro

Sunday, September 7

Bolsonaro may have been woken from his Sunday nap by some news: you are indeed the candidate of the old right, the new far right, and moderate fascism for 2026.

They might have said to Bolsonaro: we know that you are physically fragile and cannot stand for long periods of time, but it is on you that Tarcísio, his sons Flávio, Eduardo and Carluxo, and Malafaia and others around him are betting.

The far right has taken the idea of amnesty as a possibility so seriously that all anyone is talking about now is Bolsonaro. Flavio wore a"Bolsonaro 2026" t-shirt at the Copacabana protest.

They woke Bolsonaro up. Tarcísio announced Bolsonaro as his candidate in Malafaia's truck on Paulista Avenue. The rumors spread throughout Brazil, beginning with Sunday's crowds, are that Bolsonaro is the candidate of Trump, Netanyahu, Milei, Valdemar Costa Neto, Ciro Nogueira, and all the right-wingers, both nationally and internationally.

It seems paradoxical. Because Bolsonaro has his children and visiting friends say he is very sick and weak. That he wouldn't survive prison. That he is a man in no condition, emotionally or physically, to face tougher challenges.

But his followers began to take Bolsonaro's 2026 project seriously, especially after Tarcísio's maneuvers in Brasília during the week the trial of the coup-mongering group began.

The idea that amnesty can prosper in Congress and that Bolsonaro will be resurrected by the centrists and will get up and walk is being tested.

Defending amnesty would be much more than an attempt to win over Bolsonaro's loyal base, so that Bolsonaro feels comfortable and says that Tarcísio is the man he trusts.

Sunday's demonstrations, with American and Israeli flags mixed with Brazilian ones, could begin to draw Bolsonarism toward the amnesty project as a feasible option. And from there, anything could happen.

This confidence led Sunday's speakers to raise the tone of their messages to the Supreme Court, and especially to Alexandre de Moraes. Tarcísio called the minister a dictator and a tyrant.

Flávio asked for Moraes's head on a platter. Michelle wept and referred to the Supreme Court justices as"perverse authorities."

From what they've been saying, Bolsonaro is more alive than he seems and should prepare himself, with strong doses of camphorated oil, to get off the couch and take seriously the possibility of reacting and insisting on his candidacy.

It remains to be seen whether Bolsonaro himself feels prepared for this turnaround. Yes, they'll say that, even if he's freed from criminal conviction for the coup, he'll still be ineligible to run for office, as determined by the Electoral Court.

But then the composition of the TSE in 2026 will be different. New facts will create developments and produce new episodes.

Since 2016, right-wing factions, from the extreme to the moderate, have taken seriously what the left underestimates. The unpredictable has played on the side of fascism.
